The word “Eid” is Arabic for festivity, while “Fitr” translates as “to break the fast.” A three-day celebration, Eid ul-Fitr begins on the first day of the Muslim month of Shawwai. Muslims are commanded during this time to recite the Takbir, the phrase “Allahu Akbar” (God is great).
It’s customary at this time to pay special attention to grooming details and to wear one’s best clothing for the Eid prayers. These prayers are followed by the khutba (sermon) and then the dua, a supplication for forgiveness and mercy for Muslims all over the world. Those who can afford it, pay the zakat, alms for the poor which are collected at the local mosque.
Customs for the holiday vary by country. In Jerusalem, the customs that are observed by young Muslim men and boys on this holiday include horseracing in the Old City and playing with toy guns.
