Much of what is known about James the Tzaddik has been gleaned from fragments of ancient texts, and not every source is strictly authoritative. Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians for the most part believe that James was Jesus’ stepbrother, while there is a minority opinion that he was a full brother. His name, when it appears, is listed first among the siblings of Jesus, leading historians to conclude that he was probably the eldest.
A known ascetic, James had taken the Nazarite vows, which among other things meant that he did not cut his hair or drink wine. He was so respected in Jerusalem that he was permitted to wear priestly robes and to pray in the Court of Priests.
James did not follow Jesus when the latter was alive. It was after the crucifixion that James had a vision of Jesus’ resurrection. This was the main impetus for his becoming prominent in the early Christian community, until by 50 A.D. James was head of the Jerusalem church. His observance of Christianity included a devout observance of Torah law, since at that time Christianity was not viewed as being in any way contradictory to Judaism. If anything, James was more strict with regard to Torah law than the average practicing Jew.
