The Nachlaot Neighborhood in Jerusalem

There are few places in Jerusalem that can match Nachlaot for character, beauty and charm. Yet this tiny neighborhood is easy to miss, sandwiched between the noisier attractions of the city center and the Mahane Yehuda market. While there are no major sights here, there is no better way to get a feel for 19th century Jerusalem than to stroll the winding lanes and quaint back streets of Nachlaot. Built in the 1860’s, Nachlaot was one of the first Jewish neighborhoods to be formed outside the Old City walls.

A random walk through Nachlaot is the best way to discover the charms of the place. Back alleys meet with precarious stairways which turn into flower-strewn streets with gentrified new homes. Nachlaot is a neighborhood in flux, slowly transforming from a crumbling historic monument to a real estate gold mine. Jerusalem residents whose families have lived in the Nachlaot for generations, and who were once poor, now find themselves in possession of million dollar properties.

But the gentrification has been a slow process, and millionaires have not yet overrun Nachlaot. Many of the residents are Orthodox Jewish families, but with a twist: their religious beliefs tend to be flavored with mysticism and an easygoing attitude. Women wear brightly colored long skirts and whimsically layered outfits, with equally colorful headscarves if they are married. Their children run free in the streets, many of which are pedestrian-only and therefore safe. The proximity of Nachlaot to the lively Mahane Yehuda market makes shopping a breeze.

Nachlaot is also where the young, hip religious singles of the Holy City choose to live, sharing apartments and attending synagogues that celebrate their joyful approach to Judaism. As a result, several trendy eateries have sprung up in Nachlaot. One of the most popular of these is Slow Moshe, named for owner Moshe Levi. Another is The Kubiyah, a creatively lit bar that is best known for its Middle Eastern kuba soup. Residents and visitors alike go to party, to discuss ideas, and to enjoy a different kind of nightlife in the heart of the Holy City.
