The Bible recounts that thousands of years ago, King David departed the city of Hebron and laid siege to the Jebusite city of Jerusalem. There he emerged victorious and established Jerusalem as the unified capital of Judea.
According to some historical sources, David was inclusive and allowed the Jebusites equal treatment under his rule, even going so far as to appoint them to important positions in power.
After the death of King David, his son Solomon built the first Holy Temple of the Jewish people on the nearby Mount Moriah. From that time onward, Jerusalem was the holiest city to Judaism.
Kings of the Davidic dynasty reigned for hundreds of years in the Upper City of ancient Jerusalem—the location of the current City of David. In this residential area for aristocrats and royalty, a plethora of intrigues, battles and historical transformations took place.
Today, archaeologists are constantly uncovering evidence of these events, giving life to legend.
Archaeologists believe they have discovered the remains of David’s Palace in the ancient City of David. This discovery was recently supported in the past month by the excavation of an underground tunnel located beneath the structure—a tunnel whose description matches that of the one that is described in the biblical account of David’s conquest of Jerusalem.
Another discovery of note is Hezekiah’s tunnel, an ancient water system where one of the oldest Hebrew inscriptions was found. This inscription describes the construction of the tunnel in the 8th century B.C.
A vast array of discoveries have been made in the City of David excavation sites over the years, including King Zedekiah’s seal, coins, and other artifacts.
