This flourishing academy of the arts is a center of burgeoning creativity in the Holy City. Jerusalem itself, with the intensity of its passions and its blend of ancient and contemporary features, is also a place that simultaneously nurtures and ignites the abilities of blossoming young artists.
Bezalel Academy was named for the biblical figure Bezalel, an artist who designed the intricately wrought vessels of the Tabernacle. Founded in 1903, Bezalel was ideologically supported by Theodor Herzl, who felt that Israel should have an arts academy that would combine European and Jewish traditions. Art at the academy does not only consist of the traditional fine arts: metalwork, textiles and animation are also on offer.
In the course of its existence, the academy was constantly threatened by economic difficulties, especially prior to the founding of the State of Israel. Today, the campus is state-funded and located on Mount Scopus.
Some of Israel’s most prestigious artists are graduates of Bezalel, which is currently attended by more than 1000 students.
