Sultan’s Pool is situated near the southwestern gate of the Old City in part of the Valley of Hinnom, otherwise known as Gehinom—Hebrew for hell. Legend once placed this valley as an entry to the underworld, in particular Gehinom, destination of wicked souls.
But an even darker history underlies this now-sunny valley. In ancient times, worshipers of Molech sacrificed their children. The ritual was regarded as an abomination, and was banned by King Josiah. But the taint of these murders continued to cling to the reputation of the valley.
The multiple attractions of Sultan’s Pool are now far removed from its disturbing past. Many of the largest cultural events in Jerusalem, including international art festivals such as Chutzot Hayotzer, take place in the open ground of Sultan’s Pool. A large amphitheater in the valley is used for concerts and other open-air performances.
Even when no events are scheduled, Sultan’s Pool is a pleasant place to take a stroll because of its art galleries. These galleries line a pedestrian stone walkway, which offers a breathtaking view of the Old City walls and the green abundance that surrounds them.
