Soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces who fall in battle are interred on Mount Herzl. Since every Israeli is conscripted into service at the age of 18, the cemetery is emotionally charged not just as a place for fallen military men but also a place of fallen dreams. Most of the tombstones on Mount Herzl are dedicated to soldiers who were killed between the ages of 19 and 21.
Mount Herzl is also the burial place for prominent figures in Israel’s stormy history, including prime ministers Golda Meir, Ze’ev Jabotinsky and Yitzhak Rabin. Other prominent leaders and Israeli presidents are buried on the slopes of the hilltop.
Most prominent of all, though, is the tomb of Theodor Herzl, which is larger than the rest. Herzl, the first person to envision the Jewish State, symbolizes the greater ideal of Israel as a homeland for the Jewish people.
A secular Jew living in France at the tail end of the nineteenth century, Theodor Herzl was first to envision a Jewish State. It is said that the idea first came to him after he witnessed the riots following the Dreyfus Case, a famous court case in Paris in which the Jewish soldier Alfred Dreyus was accused of treason. As Herzl witnessed Parisians rioting in the streets shouting “Death to the Jews!” he realized that Jews would never be truly welcome in Europe. It was then that he resolved to help create a Jewish State.
Though he died in 1904, long before the establishment of the State of Israel, Herzl is credited with having laid the groundwork for change. His remains were moved from Vienna and interred on Mount Herzl in 1949.
