Steps away from Jaffa Gate is the new Mamila mall, an outdoor shopping center where you can sip coffee, browse high fashion, and marvel at the view of the Old City walls and the Tower of David looming in the distance. This shopper’s paradise retains the unique character of ancient Jerusalem, with its restored old facades and stone walkways. Mamila is the Fifth Avenue of Jerusalem: international fashion chains are interspersed with upscale boutiques.
Several shops in Mamila are dedicated to showcasing locally produced arts and crafts. These shops sell everything from fashion to artwork to Judaica, and take especial pride in the quality of Israeli art.
Art continues to be the theme as you make your way to Sultan’s Pool, a performance space that comes alive at night with festivals and cultural events. During the day, a quaint artists’ colony displays the work of inpidual Israeli artists.
Beyond is Mishkenot Sha’ananim, a small complex of buildings just outside the Old City walls. This historical landmark was the first Jewish neighborhood to be built outside the Old City walls of Jerusalem in the 1860’s. Artists from around the world are hosted every year in the Mishkenot Sha’ananim guesthouse, and there are constant classical music concerts in the adjacent Jerusalem Music Center.
Just beside Mishkenot Sha’ananim is the exquisitely beautiful neighborhood of Yemin Moshe. A tranquil stillness lies upon this historic place, where now only the very affluent can afford to live. It’s not hard to see why: Yemin Moshe combines stunning panoramic views of the Old City and surrounding hills with tranquil and elegant homes. The pedestrian-only stone streets are narrow and winding, and each turn is a discovery. Many artists have been inspired by these old neighborhoods that overlook the Old City, which combine the beauty of what is old with an allure that is timeless.
