Hezekiah feared exposing the water supply of Jerusalem to the Assyrian armies, while simultaneously needed to retain the supply for the city’s use. The result was the design and construction of an ingenious tunnel. Proof that it was constructed in the period of Hezekiah is at least partially ascribed to an inscription in the tunnel that archaeologists have carbon dated to the eighth century B.C.
Hezekiah’s Tunnel is a favorite among visitors to the city, being one of the only archaeological sites in Jerusalem, along with the Western Wall Tunnels, that is utterly removed from the daily bustle of the city above. Here the past is tangible in the inky black darkness of the tunnel, lit only by the fitful gleams of flashlights.
Waterproof shoes are a must, as the tunnel is nearly knee-deep in water. During the annual period of winter rains, tours to Hezekiah’s Tunnel are often cancelled due to flash floods. Luckily for visitors to the region, rain in Israel never occurs outside the winter months of the year.
Aside from its importance as a window into the period of Hezekiah’s reign, the tunnel also represents a technological marvel in its own right. The workers who dug the tunnel began their work at opposite ends, eventually meeting in the middle. This was a feat rarely achieved in the construction of ancient tunnels: the workers could just as easily have passed each other.
Now visitors find themselves trekking in the footsteps of these same workers, in a place dug into the living rock more than a thousand years ago, in defense of their Holy City.
