The Monastery of the Cross is located in the Valley of the Cross, overlooked by the Knesset and the Israel Museum. It is surrounded by acres of uncultivated land that is closed to the public, separating the medieval complex from Jerusalem traffic.
The Monastery of the Cross is a Georgian monastery that was built in the eleventh century, during the reign of King Bagrat IV. It is believed by some that the site on which the monastery now stands was first consecrated by Constantine of Rome in the fourth century. Reason for the consecration is that it is believed by some to be the burial place of Adam’s head, from which grew the tree that would become the True Cross.
It is further believed that Constantine gave land as a gift to the Georgian King Miriam III in 327 A.D., in the advent of his country’s conversion to Christianity.
The Monastery of the Cross was once filled with works of Christian art, but these have since been destroyed or transported to Europe. Today the monastery is occupied by Patriarchate monks, and houses a museum, cafeteria and gift shop. The museum chronicles the daily life of the monks in the Middle Ages.
