The History of the Cardo
In 70 A.D., the Romans destroyed Jerusalem, along with the
Second Temple. They killed thousands of the city’s Jewish inhabitants
and marched the rest into exile to become slaves for the Empire.
Upon the wasteland of Jerusalem that they had created, the Romans built a new city which they named Aelia Capitolina. It was during this time that that it is believed that the Cardo was first built.
A “cardo” was a north-south oriented street that often served
as the business center of the city. The Romans built the Cardo, flanked
by stately columns and with arches to accommodate market stands. It is
believed that the Cardo was the hub of the city during the Roman
period; the central thoroughfare where a bustling marketplace was
located.
Reconstructing the Cardo for Our Time
In 1971, shortly after Israel reclaimed the Jewish Quarter,
a proposal was put forward to reconstruct the ancient marketplace of
the Cardo while still allowing archaeologists to excavate what
remained. Such a plan would need to be carried out even as residential
areas were being built at the street level above.
Archaeologists’ discoveries in the Cardo included a wall from the Hasmonean period and Byzantine-era columns.
Today, the Cardo is accessed via stairs from the street level of the Jewish Quarter.
Visitors first pass through an open courtyard where the ancient pillars
reach upward in all their glory. Beyond is the shopping arcade, where
ancient-style arches frame the Judaica and other specialty shops within.
